Orion Grid Technologies

OUR MISSION:
TO TURN THE GRID FROM BOTTLENECK TO ENABLER OF THE ENERGY TRANSITION

Our low-voltage distribution grids are under increasing pressure from the energy transition. Distribution system operators are struggling to keep up with the growth of solar panels, heat pumps, electric-car charging, and home batteries. To manage, plan, and operate efficiently, DSOs need tools that convert their data into actionable information. This is where Orion Grid Technologies steps in.

We are a team of people with a drive to facilitate the energy transition and help mitigate climate change, and a love for innovation and high tech. Our ambition is to reduce the costs the energy transition triggers in the electricity distribution grids, and to strengthen this society-critical infrastructure. At the crossroads of power-system engineering and AI, we design and build data-driven tools for distribution system operators, tools that improve visibility of the low-voltage grid and provide decision support to every affected grid-operator division.

Orion Grid Technologies BV was incorporated in 2025 as a spin-off of VITO, KU Leuven, and EnergyVille, building on a decade of R&D. We are headquartered in Genk, Belgium.

WORK AT ORION

We build tools that help the electricity grid carry the energy transition — and they are used, today, in the field, by real distribution system operators. If you want your work to have a direct, measurable impact against climate change, while working on power-system and data-science technology that goes beyond the state of the art, we would like to hear from you.

WHY WORK HERE?

Your work ends up in the field, not on a shelf.
Our tools run in production at DSOs like Fluvius and Mitnetz Strom, on real grid data and real field cases. What you build gets used, and you get to see the difference it makes.

The problems are genuinely hard.
We work at the crossing of power-system engineering and AI, on low-voltage grids that are data-scarce, stochastic and messy. Getting useful, trustworthy information out of that is a real challenge.
‍
A small team, with real ownership.
We are a compact team, so you own meaningful parts of what we do, from idea to deployment, and your work is visible. We expect people who take initiative, and we make room for it.

Research mindset, field pragmatism.
We come from a research background — Orion is a spin-off of VITO, KU Leuven and EnergyVille — but we co-develop everything with DSOs, on their data and their problems. We care about what works in the field, not just what works on paper. It’s a working solution that matters, not how fancy the method is. As simple as possible, as complex as needed, is how we approach challenges.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR

We mostly look for data scientists and machine-learning engineers, and power-system engineers. Our engineers are experts in both domains, and we expect you to grow that way as well. We require solid experience in one domain, and real affinity for the other. We also look for people who know how to close a commercial deal and run a complex project, but who still have enough technical affinity and interest to stand their ground in a room full of engineers.

The practical bit

We are based at the Incubathor, on Thor Park in Genk, Belgium, next to the EnergyVille campus. Our team is international and our working language is English. We support hybrid work.

HOW TO APPLY

Send your CV and a few words about yourself to jobs@orion.be.

“My contribution to Orion looks different from that of most of my wonderful colleagues. I'm not a researcher or a developer, and I work only a couple of hours per week but I have the most fun job! My task is building a DSO community: a digital and physical space where real people meet to exchange their challenges and potential solutions for grid management. Knowing that this matters to people, and in the long run impacts the energy transition, is what drives me!”

Ariane

“The team builds tools that make a difference in the field, it is exciting to see such a direct positive impact from our work”

Antonio

"Directly interacting with engineers at the DSO while developing and deploying products, and immediately seeing the impact of my work, is a lot of fun."

Bert

“I immediately had the opportunity to help kickstart a new product from day 1, originating from an urgent question from a DSO. I consider it a unique privilege to build products that are deeply anchored in research and field expertise, while at the same time having a real tangible impact due to the close collaboration with our customers built on mutual trust. It's R&D, business analysis, software development and everything in between. To do all this as part of such a driven and talented team is very inspiring, and I feel very lucky to be a part of this!”
